If you want to get your meal planning right, it comes down to two things: knowing what your body needs and tracking the food you eat. That’s it.
Once you can clearly see how the food you’re eating matches up with your daily eating goals, you can make small tweaks until you get where you need to be.
1. Calculate Your Calories and Macronutrients
The first thing you need to do before you start monitoring the food your eating is to calculate your macros. Don’t worry, all you’re doing is determining how many calories you should eat and what percentage is carbohydrates, protein, and fats.
Just go to our calorie and macronutrient calculator and fill in the blanks. (Men click “HIGH” at the bottom and women click “MEDIUM” – this just determines the right amount of protein for you.)

When it asks for your weight goals, just specify whether you’re trying to gain, maintain or lose weight.
2. Start Using Your New Fitness Pal

This is the best app because it manages your weight loss program for you. As long as you know food intake goals (based on fitness calculator), you just enter in what you eat every day and it will show you how you’re doing.
It also has a food database which makes it really easy to use. For example, if you ate a Cliff Bar for breakfast, you go in and search for Cliff Bar and you’ll easily find the specific flavor you ate and will populate all the nutritional info for you.
This is awesome because it means you don’t have to be a calorie counter – the app will do it for you. That means more time jumping rope and less time calorie counting. Sounds like a win-win to us.
